Opportunity To Do garage sales

We received an email from the organiser of the Charity To Do garage sales:

'Our next Charity Garage Sale is on Saturday 6 June.  Hoping to get a good turnout even though its a long weekend.  Plenty of new stock including heaps of toys, bikes, some vintage SLR cameras and vintage books plus all the regular clothing, kitchenware etc.  More details in our facebook event listing

 If all goes well then we hope to raise the final amount needed to set up a Savings and Loan Cooperative (community bank) in Malawi.

Saturday Finds

Some Saturday morning finds...

Vinnies monster warehouse sale starts Friday

Yes it is last year's poster, but we don't have a copy of this year's.  Be assured that the sale is on Friday-Sunday at Mitchell.

Move over Two Buck Chuck*

7.30am, Saturday.  The temperature is -1C. We're leaving town for a couple of weeks but there's a garage sale in a suburb near the highway so we pop in - it doesn't do to anger the frugalling gods by passing an open garage sale or op-shop.

Among the usual detritus is a full wine rack. 

"How much?" we ask.

"$2 a bottle".  TOF's on his knees in seconds, sorting through the small collection of reds, picking  out the odd bottle.  

We're in a bit of a hurry, though, so we grab the 13 bottles thay have. At $2 a bottle it is within our holiday budget and we load them up.  I figure we only have to get one or two decent bottles out of it and we're ahead.  The rest can feed mother (the red wine vinegar mother, that is).

We open a bottle at a caravan park in South West Rocks on that night.  Chateau Tahbilk (one of our favourite wineries) 1996 Shiraz.

Our verdict, bloody brilliant.

Women’s Legal Centre Bags ‘n’ Bling - 6 April 2010

What is Bags ‘n’ Bling:
For those of you who are new to this game, it goes something like this - stylish gals donate handbags and jewellery they don't wear or love anymore to our sale. Then women from all over town come along on the night to grab a bargain from somebody else's clean out.

Donations Needed:
Now is the time to start your early spring cleaning and dig out all those much loved handbags, clutches and satchels as well as any sparkly baubles you don't wear anymore for a great cause.

Tip:
Start encouraging your friends to donate items you have been admiring in their handbag or jewellery stash so you can buy it for yourself on the night!

All proceeds from the evening go to the WLC to assist us to keep providing a quality legal service to women in the ACT and region.

A good day frugalling for us today.

I picked up a pair of brand new snow boots for $20 ($300 retail) at a garage sale, along with some sewing fabric at $1 a piece.

But best of all, four Fowler's jars for $1.50 each at YMCA  Belconnen.  The Old Flame and I are loving bottling fruit, and these jars (long with the two TOF picked up for $1 each last week) are excellent additions to the working collection. 

Anyone know of fruit or jars going spare?  Happy to pick our own if your tree is overloaded and you don't have the time or inclination to deal with it.

Are you being servietted?

New/old napkins on the washing line. 

I bought 17 cloth napkins recently in navy, yellow, red, green and cream at a garage sale for $2 and another 8 navy napkins at the tip shop for $1.  These are going into the big box under the house where we keep our catering sets of glasses (all from op-shops) and other barbecue and party paraphernalia.  I loathe plastic cups and glasses and much prefer cloth to paper napkins.

Goulburn and Garage Sales

A quick day trip to Goulburn on Saturday, I had actually remembered to look up potential garage sales on Saturday night. Managed to make it to three garage sales - including one at St Andrews church, where I picked up some great haberdashery bits for between 10 and 40 cents. I also purchased a Mary Poppins book and scarf for Sage - she took them before I got to take a photo. I also purchased a box of old soft drink bottles - these are still outside, waiting to be washed.

Visiting Red Cross, the Smith Family and Vinnies - my only purchase was these fabulous bowls for 50 cents each. They are in great condition - so now I will be searching for more in the setting.

Rotary was having a book fair - only advertising I saw was a sign on the street. I picked up some vintage Little Golden Books and a Asterix book, for my other daughter. Did not realise it was in French until I gave it to her, oh well - another one for her collection!

Vinnies Warehouse Sale

The Canberra Weekly of 1 Sept reports that 2,500 shoppers attended the Vinniees Warehouse sale a couple of weeks ago.

The sale raised 23,000 dollars for Vinnies Youth.

There are plans for another sale next year.

Much Madness in Mitchell

As The Shopping Sherpa pointed out, Vinnies in Mitchell was having a two day Warehouse sale.


So on Friday morning i put my op-shopping shoes on and set of for the Mitchell Vinnies store.

I realised the sale was popular when i was one street away and saw cars parked everywhere. Although they did have some sense and have one set of doors marked as in and another as out. As you walked in you were given a price list and they also had a sausage sizzle going and had hired two porta-loos that were setup in the car park.

Once inside i saw that they had not renovated the old shop, but had instead added two extra rooms, which doubled the space of the old shop. Clothing and shoes where everywhere, and piled high.




And for some reason (that only ever happens in op-shops and Best and less, the mens wear was hidden at the back right of the shop.

I found nothing i wanted in the mens pants area although as i was leaving i ran into a friend who had picked up a Duck-down jacket. The price list said jackets are $7.00, so i have to assume she got it for that.

After, i went round to the Mitchell Salvos store. I saw a number of faces there that i had seen earlier at Vnnies, so i have to assume they were doing ok too.

YMCA garage sales

I saw this on the door at the Belconnen YMCA shop.

I guess the last line is the important line. Future sales will be the first Saturday of even numbered months (First Saturday of February, April, June, August, October and December).

I wonder if they realise that these dates include the October long weekend and Easter 2010 is going to be April 2 until April 5.

Queanbeyan find

Went out and enjoyed garage saling this morning - nearly called in to see you TSS... but realised we were out of room.

Queanbeyan Uniting Church has a jumble sale on - at the back of the church - and for wool lovers - they have a bit of a range there for cheap cheap prices. I got 4 full balls (50g) of knitting cotton for $1.

Another source for bargains, Embassy sales

Another good source for the occasional bargain is one of the many Embassies that are located in Canberra. Every so often they will have tender sales or Auctions of their unwanted furniture and/or office equipment.

On Wednesday 4 March 2009, the US embassy is having a Tender Sale of unwanted furniture and equipment. Inspection and bidding is from 11am to 2pm and the sale location is.

Unit 18/1 Pirie St,
Fyshwick. A.C.T.

Remember, it is a Tender sale rather than an Auction or Garage sale.

In a Tender sale you wander around, inspect the items and place a Tender bid on them. At the end of the Tendering period, the bids are collated and the person who bid the highest for each item gets that item. The results are posted outside the embassy, and on the web. You then have to pay and collect your items in the period set a set time / date.

Young man ... Go to the YMCA

On Saturday Taph and I went to the YMCA garage sale, because it is fun, to go, to the YMCA garage sale (Sorry, but as I write this, that song is still going through my head).

We got there after 12, and in doing so were able to pick up a couple of bargains. Taph managed to pick up all this Tupperware for a couple of dollars.
